An ultra-rare Michael Jordan trading card fetched for a record amount at a recent Goldin auction, which set a new record for any MJ card sold. In the same auction, an iconic game-used Kobe Bryant jersey also fetched millions of dollars.

The card came from the 2003 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection set and features Jordan's autograph on the front with the NBA Logoman patch portion of his uniform. It sold for a whopping $2.93 million as part of an auction called Goldin 100. The sale made it the most expensive Michael Jordan card ever sold at an auction, according to Goldin.

Goldin founder and CEO Ken Goldin told Angelo Guinhawa of ClutchPoints that the card was “the Holy Grail of Michael Jordan cards.” He said that “most people have never even seen a picture of the card and or seen it in person for the past 20 years,” making this more valuable than other Jordan cards in the market.

“Many people thought it would still be inside an unopened pack that sat on the shelf for 21 years — it was the Chicago Bulls logo of Michael Jordan off a game-used Chicago Bulls jersey, it is universally accepted as the single greatest Michael Jordan card ever produced. This will certainly become the single most valuable Michael Jordan card ever sold,” Goldin said.

The card came from a collector who approached Goldin three years prior to its eventual sale at the auction. Goldin initially convinced the private collector to have the card graded, then later sold at the recently concluded Goldin 100 auction. The card received 38 bids before reaching its ultimate winning bid of $2.93 million.

Other Jordan-related memorabilia also sold at auction

Two other Michael Jordan-related memorabilia also hit the block in the Goldin 100 auction, aside from the 2003 Upper Deck Michael Jordan card. A used pair of Nike Air Jordan 1, which was worn by Jordan in a 1985 trip to Europe, sold for $444,080 (with buyer's premium) during the auction. The pair was noteworthy as Jordan played an exhibition game in Trieste, Italy, where he soared for a slam dunk and shattered the venue's backboard.

Meanwhile, another Jordan trading card hit the block at the auction, with a PSA GEM MT 10-graded copy of his 1986-87 Fleer rookie card fetching $292,800 (with buyer's premium) after 22 bids.

Kobe Bryant “Achilles injury” jersey sold for $1.2 million in auction

A jersey worn by Kobe Bryant during his “Achilles injury game” against the Golden State Warriors in 2013 fetched for $1.2 million dollars, which served as the other main attraction of the Goldin 100 auction. In contrast, a jersey worn by Bryant during his 2007-08 MVP season sold for a final price of $5.8 million.

Bryant signed the front “4” of his iconic “24” jersey number, with the game-used jersey photomatched for authenticity. Previously, it was expected that bids for the jersey would range between $3 million to $5 million.
